The silence was nice, for a moment, hardly awkward for him. He was used to not really talking to too many people. His dad, for sure, and a few family friends. Not their kids. They never liked him. But the adults? Yeah, he got along with them just fine, always had, really. 'Mature' they called him. He wasn't always too sure he liked it, and he was pretty sure it wasn't as accurate as they all thought.
Then, she broke the silence again, asking him if he'd like to travel with her, at least for a while. He hesitated to answer, clearly a little uncertain, almost scared, even. Not that he was afraid of her right now, or anything, but he couldn't help thinking of that one time, back home, when someone had pretended to be his friend, only to find out more things to make fun of him about. But this didn't seem quite the same, so he nodded, still rather cautious but willing to agree.
S-sure. I suppose so. Might stop a lot for pictures along the way, though.
He decided to warn her, almost as a sort of test; If she minded, not along would she likely withdraw her offer, it would prove to him she probably didn't actually care for being his friend. Friends supported each other, after all. He hadn't had any human friends, but he did know that. If she didn't mind... Well, maybe it wasn't such a bad idea after all.

Tayonis looked up from her shirt and smiled. "That's great! An' I don't mind you stoppin' for pictures. It could be nice seein' a master photographer at work." Him stopping to take pictures didn't even register in her head as a problem in any sort of way. It was his hobby and if he liked doing it then so be it. They'd stop as much as he liked she didn't mind at all.
She laughed a little at the end of her last sentence and put her hands in her lap again. Her unusual shyness gone. "Besides, you stoppin' for pictures could give me time t'work on Sepia's moves." Her last sentence made her wonder... Had Rylee ever battled before? It seemed likely that he hadn't since she had known a few breeders that hadn't battled a single day in their lives. It was a weird prospect to her... She'd been inside a house with her mother and had gotten into a few battles in her life. Breeders got out much more than she did so battles seemed inevitable.
Tayonis looked up at the sky and wondered how much longer the heat could last. She could see a few clouds that could cover the sun... but it seemed like it would be forever before they did. She was sick of sitting under this tree waiting for it to get cooler. She hated waiting... why she didn't know. It wasn't like she had a short-attention span or anything... Maybe, she should strike up another conversation. It would help pass the time by quicker... Nah, Rylee was probably tired of her running her mouth anyway. So, she sat back against the tree and resumed her position of her hands behind her head.
After a few minutes however she couldn't take it anymore. She was naturally talkative and it was showing. "So, how much longer you think this God-Forsaken heat will last? 'Cause I for one am quite tired of sittin' under this tree."

The fact that she didn't care surprised him, a bit, but also pleased him. It was a rather happy day, having found his first non-pokemon friend after being around for fifteen years. He'd probably had friends as a baby, of course, but he didn't remember him and they certainly hadn't been friends since, at least, around the time he could actually remember.
The silence came back, and Rylee leaned back against the tree, closing his eyes against the harsh light of the sun, letting his brain wander back to that map he had in one of his books. He had it with him, of course, but wasn't really in the mood to get it out. And, to be bluntly honest, he'd been re-reading it since he was ten. He highly doubted he actually needed it in front of him anymore anyway.
He opened his eyes again, letting his head swivel her way without taking it off the tree trunk, as she complained about the heat, when, finally, the area they were in was in his head as well, as he went through the map. He'd come from Mahogany Town to here, and it had been quite a ways... Not answering he quite yet, he looked past her, leaning forward so her head wasn't blocking his view. Yep. There they were. The slight hills that supposedly covered a cave filled with ice. Now that would be nice! Much more like home, too. He figured it was worth a shot, and stood up, holding a hand out for her to grab and help herself up with.
C'mon. Supposedly there's an ice path over there, in those hills. It's gotta be cooler in there, and the wild pokemon shouldn't bother us.
By bother, of course, he meant attack. He'd never been attacked by a wild pokemon; In fact, many had almost seemed to come out of hiding to say hello. It had been a strange phenomenon everyone had tried to make sense of all his life. He, on the other hand, wasn't sure why the pokemon didn't go say hello to other people. He figured it was normal, his strange relationship with the creatures who would attack most.
Once Tay was up, he grabbed his camera bag, nearly tipping over until he found his balance, and proceeded to head, rather sluggishly, toward the hills. The coolness was a beckoning force, perhaps, but it didn't take away to effects of the current heat which kept everyone slow unless they had reason to be otherwise.

"And why shouldn't they bother us? She asked, quizzically. For as long as she had been a trainer all of the pokemon seemed to just flock and attack... Well, maybe not all of them. Some of them had fled when she came near. Nonetheless, she grabbed his hand and pulled herself up. The prospect of going somewhere called the Ice Path made her quite happy and enthusiastic to go. "Thanks." Once she stood and dusted the dirt off of her she turned and called to Sepia. The little evolution pokemon stood and shook herself off. Drowsily she stumbled to Tay's side. Feeling sorry for the little pokemon, Tayonis picked her up, and held her close to her. Sepia was very happy at this and fell promptly to sleep again.
Tayonis noticed that Rylee was about to fall over and she almost rushed over to help but he righted himself again. Much to her relief. Then, they set off. It was a shock to find how much cooler the shade was than being out in the open, exposed. She was almost sad to leave, but then she remembered. She was resting for a while so it was no wonder that it was so hot to her. She was surprised that it didn't feel worse.
The pace they set was kind of slow... but that was to be expected. She was fine with it actually. Since, they wouldn't over exert themselves and pass out, and all. So long as they made it to this wondrous Ice Path, she would be happy... She wondered how far it was and why she had never heard of it... Maybe it was because she had never bothered to study her map and she had never exactly left her house much previous to this.
The eevee in her arms whimpered and tried to snuggle further into her to get away from the sun. She murmured comforting words to the pokemon. "Don't worry... It won't be long until we're out of this sun, Sep" The eevee seemed a little bit better and stopped whimpering. Falling asleep again. "Man, I can't wait to get to this place... It'll be so nice I won't know what t'do." She said lightly, trying to keep their spirits up. Maybe if they didn't concentrate on the heat it would be easier going.

I dunno. They never seem to bother me. Wild pokemon were actually my only friends growing up. Sorta like a pseudo family.
He replied, shrugging a bit, still not really understand why the pokemon would bother them. It seemed ridiculous for him, seeing as it had never happened to him personally. He always been out alone, or with his parents, too, not actual trainers, so he'd never actually even seen pokemon attack without a command from a trainer.
As they walked toward the hills, which, very much like an oasis illusion in a desert, never seemed to get closer if you stared at it, he thought about it for a moment. He figured she probably ask what he meant, so it was more picking out one of many stories he could tell about his childhood.
I was always the kid left out, really. I loved books, school, and I've always been rather small. The kids bullied me, so I spent a lot of time alone, just outside Snowpoint City; That's where I grew up, in Sinnoh. Wild pokekmon always seemed to flock to me. There was this one, a piloswine. She'd let me ride around on her back for hours, and rather than go back home to rest on the couch she'd just sort of curl around me, like a giant pillow radiating enough heat to keep me warm. Mum always said she must have thought I was her kid or something.

Tayonis chuckled a bit when he mentioned the pseudo family thing. If only wild pokemon did that to her... It would be so much easier to catch. Not that she really wanted any other pokemon, she was just fine with one at the moment. Heck, she may be fine with one for the rest of her life. Who knew?
Then, she got to thinking. Wild pokemon were his only friends? Did that mean he didn't have any human friends? Even she had had someone a friend growing up in her town. She had lost touch now that she was traveling... but the point still remained that she had one. What Rylee was saying meant that he didn't have any prior to her... That seemed a little far out there but what he said next confirmed it.
"I was always the kid left out, really. I loved books, school, and I've always been rather small. The kids bullied me, so I spent a lot of time alone, just outside Snowpoint City;-" Her thoughts sort of zoned out after that. So, she was right. How could kids pick on him because of his size? He didn't seem that little... or maybe it was because she was so short. Well, that didn't matter! Size doesn't make the person, the person makes the person. Then, it was no wonder he had seemed so shy before... he probably wasn't used to people showing him kindness.
"...she'd just sort of curl around me, like a giant pillow radiating enough heat to keep me warm. Mum always said she must have thought I was her kid or something. Fortunately, Tayonis managed to start listening again towards the end of the piloswine story. It was never a good idea to talk a long time in go around her. She couldn't really concentrate without thinking of something else in the middle of it. It wasn't her fault she was just born that way...
She looked ahead ahead at their destination as she thought... Hmm, those hills in the distance didn't seem to be getting any closer. She hoped it wasn't a mirage... That would be horrible if it was... Anyway, back on the right thought track... No wonder he wasn't used to pokemon attacking. They all seemed to like him, especially by the story he told. She had gotten enough idea to know that a wild pokemon had liked him enough to curl around him. Unless it was a human... which she seriously doubted.
"I see... you've had a lot of trouble with people our age before. Well y'know what? I think they're stupid. They don't know a person of good quality when they see-" Then, something caught her attention before she completely finished her last sentence. A small wisp of cloud moved of the sun. Tayonis joyously looked up. "Oh my God, look! The sun's about t'be..." Then the thin cloud moved away from the sun and she could see the other clouds were miles away. She looked dejectedly at the ground. "Darn it..." She muttered under her breath.
It took her a full two seconds to realize she hadn't finished her previous statement. "Oh! I'm sorry I forgot to finish my sentence! She cleared her throat and started over. "Those people who made fun of you because of your size are all stupid. They never stopped to get to know you and see that you're a really nice person." She said smiling.

He was kind of left hanging at the end of one of her sentences, but he didn't mind so much. He had a feeling it would be something his parents, and the other adults who knew his troubles, had regurgitated over and over again as he grew up. He just didn't take it personally anymore. He knew it wasn't; This, alone, was proof of that, if he hadn't known before.
He looked around a bit as they walked, listening to her but not really replying. There wasn't much to reply to, not in his perspective. Then again, he was very talkative, either, which is probably what resulted in his silence.
It didn't help he was also sort of reminiscing, remembering all those cold winters and not-much-warmer summers out among the trees, or near the lake. There was that one time he'd tried to go swimming in the lake, since the other kids were in the heated indoor pool. Hypothermia was not a pleasant experience, that was for sure. He smiled at it nonetheless. It was a pretty exciting story, sort of like something he'd read about.
When he actually bothered to tune back into the real world, and looked up, the hills were right there, and it sort of startled him. It shouldn't have, really. He was known to daydream, zone out, and more time would often go by than he would realize.
He quicken his pace for the last few steps, relishing in the cool air that flowed out from the caves and he soon stepped in. His feet quickly found their grip on the ice, from long years of practice back home. He tread carefully to a small rocky patch, sitting down on a boulder and digging out one of his sweaters, knowing that with the fact he was sweating it would be easy to catch a chill, or worse, with the sudden temperature change. He tossed another one to Tay.
You should slip that on.

After Tayonis finished speaking she realized Rylee most likely wasn't going to reply again. She didn't mind really, after all, he wasn't very talkative and she was. She was actually surprised that he had talked for as long as he did. So, for now, she was just happy to have the company of another person even if there was a silence.
Tay watched as the hills in the distance grew closer and closer... who knew that they were arriving so quickly? It seemed like just a few seconds ago they were sitting under the cheer in the shade. Now, they were about to go into the Ice Path. She couldn't wait to get inside of it the prospect of coolness made her so happy.
Before she knew it they were at the hills. She smiled and hurried into it. However, that wasn't wise. There was a reason it was called the Ice Path... it had ice on the ground. She almost slipped and fell down but she just managed to catch herself. Quickly, Tay sat Sepia down on the ground. The little pokemon was immediately awake once her paws hit the ice but she didn't slip like Tayonis did since her paws had pads on the bottom. However, the pokemon did glare up at Tay. She had been sleeping quite well and now she had to walk on her own... What a horrible life she lived...
The cold air sent a bit of a shock to Tayonis. After being outside in the hot sun it was like traveling from one extreme to the next. She undid the tie she made in her shirt so it would fall and cover her stomach. It made the air feel a slight bit less cold... only slightly though. She was a little bit surprised though when Rylee tossed her the sweater.
"You should slip that on."
She nodded and said a hasty "thanks" to him before putting it on. The sweater was slightly too big but only slightly. Otherwise though, it was fine. The cold she had felt before though was gone... Much better.

He smiled and set his bag on the ground, digging out his camera again and slinging it around his neck before closing up his bag and leaving it there. There was no one around to take it anyway. He stood up again and glanced around, biting his lip, then deciding on a random direction. He knew he wouldn't get lost; He never seemed to. He turned back to face her.
I'm gonna go further in, see if I find anything of interest. You're welcome to come, as long as you keep your voice quiet and keep the sudden movements to a minimum. The less intimidating you are, the more pokemon we'll see.
He told her, though he didn't really wait for her reply. He was used to being impulsive when it came to just going out to take photographs. Wherever felt right at the time, that where he went, and he waited for no one. He easily made his way across the icy patches, experience paying off, until he came to a stop around a bend, sitting down and simply waiting.
Of course, just because he was waiting didn't mean he was doing nothing. There were always scenery pictures to be taken, his telephoto lens to use to see if there were any pokemon approaching that he couldn't see yet without it. Within minutes, he had at least twenty photos, though there was probably only one that he'd actually like, and had spotted a rather curious couple pokemon; one spheal, a piloswine(ah, the memories!) and an absol.
Wonder if any of 'em'll come closer...
He murmured, more to himself than anyone, not having paid enough attention to know whether Tay had followed him or not. If she had, he had a feeling he'd get a question about what he meant, but as long as she didn't speak too loud he really could care less.

Wow, he sure could be bossy where taking pictures was involved. That’s what he had to be wanting to do anyway if he was trying to find something of interest. As for being quiet and not making sudden movements… that was easy. Her middle name was “Quiet” it would be a snap. How could he even believe that she couldn’t be quiet and inconspicuous?
She nodded to her friend and was about to say a reply when he took off. Rolling her eyes she followed him. Watching learning as he went over the icy patches. She picked on how to do it so she wouldn’t fall and ruin the whole trip. She was feeling quite proud of herself actually. Then, Rylee stopped and sat. She walked forward and picked a spot beside him to sit down.
Now was the difficult part for her… Sitting with nothing to do but wait… Doing that was her natural enemy. As it probably proved right now. She started twiddling her thumbs for a few minutes as she thought of her childhood when she played in the snow… actually she would still play in the snow now, except it was ice and she doubted anyone would like being hit with an iceball. Growing bored of those thoughts she wondered if staying at the entrance of the cave would be better… No, then she would have been bored with no company…
She glanced up at Rylee and saw him taking various pictures. How he found it fun was beyond her… It was just bore her to death. Pictures were never something she was interested in… much to the disdain of her friends who loved taking senseless photos of themselves for entertainment. She had always hated that…
The teenager, fortunately, glanced in the right direction for she saw three pokemon. A spheal, piloswine, and… Oh cool! An absol! She liked absols! Maybe she should catch it… no, it would disturb the scenery. And besides… she didn’t have any pokeballs anyway…
”Wonder if any of 'em'll come closer… Closer? Why would he want them closer wouldn’t they get spooked and run away? She decided to voice her thoughts. She almost managed to ruin the trip with her voice echoing loudly in the cave however, she caught herself and lowered her voice to that of a whisper. ”Why would you want ‘em closer? Won’t they run if they see us?”

He grinned and shrugged, taking a few more pictures, mostly in the absol's direction. Piloswine and spheal were common enough back home, but absol... Well, lets just say he had only seen them in books, and it was a thrill to see one for real. He lowered the camera again for a moment to regain his sense of how far away everything really was.
Nah. Not if we don't scare 'em away. Spheal are generally curious; Piloswine could mostly care less; Absol, from what I understand, aren't exactly the 'scared' type.
He replied in a soft whisper, as the absol ventured closer, having heard the camera and the chatter. It didn't look particularly happy right now, but Rylee slipped the camera off from over his head, placing it in Tay's lap as he slowly got into a crouching position.
Hold that, and be careful with it. It's a couple thousand dollars.
He hoped she would stay; He knew the chances were the pokemon, none of them, would run from him. Some always did, of course, but minimally. He slowly stood up, staying somewhat hunched, smaller, less intimidating that way. He used hte ice to his advantage, sliding rather than walking when he could, then stopping every time the absol pulled away a bit. Closer, he simply stopped and crouched again, holding out his hand.
For a moment, it simply stared at him as if he was insane. Then, it got curious and Rylee's mention of pokemon simply being drawn to him became an honest truth, and bluntly obvious, because the dark-type pokemon began, cautiously, walking towards him, until it touched its nose to his finger rather tentatively.
Rylee smiled, slowly pulling his hand back and sitting down again, pulling a small, somewhat dried out, treat out of his pocket. It cinched the matter, and the pokemon, however wild, came directly in front of him, grabbing the treat and eating it, watching him and Tay, but not running nor atacking.

Well, she certainly wasn’t going to scare them off. She was too entranced by the close proximity of them. There were only a few times she had gotten close to wild pokemon. That was either when she was about to battle them or when… well actually that was really the only time she had gotten close. Wild pokemon always seemed to run, however with what Rylee had said it shouldn’t be true for him.
When Rylee had put the camera in her lap she grabbed it and nodded. There was no way she was going to drop it or anything, examine it maybe, but not drop it. Who would do that? Not her. She looked at the camera and studied it, not turning it on, mind you. She finally brought her attention back up to Rylee. He looked like he was walking towards the pokemon, more specifically the absol. She silently watched not daring to move lest she scared away the pokemon.
She noticed how cleverly he seemed to move on the ice. He was sliding one minute, and the next he was walking, steadily making his way closer to the absol. Whenever the pokemon tried to pull away from him however he’d stop and wait until the absol calmed. Then, Rylee stopped altogether and held out his hand…
There’s no way that pokemon is going to… To Tayonis’ amazement… the pokemon made its way closer to her friend. Seemingly curious… So, he was right, pokemon were drawn to him… but there was no way that it would get any closer than a few inches. It seemed almost too good to be true. However, she found herself holding her breath when it kept getting closer then, it touched its nose to his hand.
She slowly let out her breath so no sound would be made… How about that? Even though Rylee had told her that pokemon seemed to be drawn to him, she couldn’t help but hold a little bit of doubt. She had never seen pokemon come to a human like that before… save if it were a tame pokemon coming to a trainer.
When Rylee pulled out the pokemon treat she knew that it wasn’t going anywhere. Which anyone with half a brain could tell. No pokemon no matter how wild could resist pokemon treats. Still in awe, she watched as the pokemon ate the treat and showed no signs of running or attacking. It was a wonderful thing… she wondered if the pokemon would let her come close? She didn’t have the “talent” that Rylee did… she was just a regular person who caught and trained pokemon. Not a photographer who seemed so friendly that even pokemon weren’t afraid.

Rylee stretched out a careful hand, scratching the absol behind its ears gently, which it certainly seemed to enjoy. Certain it wasn't going anywhere in particular, he slowly made his way backwards, headed back to his camera. For a moment, the pokemon only watching, then cautiously followed, eying Tayonis more so than Rylee who he'd already deemed safe.
Once back where he began, Rylee picked his camera up again, now happy enough to take some closer up shots for a few minutes as the absol worked its way closer, then letting the camera hang from his neck.
Told you.
He murmured softly to Tay, then slipped a pokemon treat into her hand, motioning with his head that she should try. He figured she'd probably watched well enough to know to move slow, careful, let the pokemon come to her a little more. Patience was a virtue, especially in these cases.

Tay watched as the pokemon and her friend came closer. However, she had her eyes more so on he absol than Rylee now. She had never been this close to one before... It was so cool she hoped the pokemon would stay for a while.
Tayonis didn't even feel up to rolling her eyes at his "told you" so she just nodded and mouthed the words "you did". When he put the pokemon treat in her hand she looked at him. She barely dared to breath the words but she did, "Me?" But it was obvious that he meant it was her turn to try and feed the wild pokemon...
So carefully she raised to a crouch. Making her way slowly, slower than she ever felt like she had moved before she advanced on the pokemon. She used the ice like she had seen Rylee do previously. It barely seemed like she was getting anywhere really but she dared not go any quicker lest the pokemon run. That would be a horrible thing if it did... Finally, when she felt as if she were close enough she slowly extended her hand with the treat in it towards the absol. Hopefully, if hadn't been chased off before and wouldn't be chased off now.
She had felt as if she'd moved slow enough for the pokemon. It had been painstakingly slow for her, she'd even moved across the ice by sliding forward. Now she was close enough to where the pokemon could see the treat in her hand. No pokemon could resist treats, right?

The absol didn't move, though it didn't come closer either. It looked back over at Rylee for a moment, as if checking to make sure he thought it was okay. The boy was just sitting there, smiling, knowing there wasn't anything he could do to help without making it worse.
When she held out her hand, the pokemon perked up a little, recognizing the small treat as the same thing he'd received from Rylee. And that was that; It grabbed up the treat happily, and, although it didn't quite trust the two of them, it certainly wasn't about to hurt them, or run, as long as they were careful not to do anything to drastic.
Standing up fully, Rylee made his way over, ever careful, but not quite so much as before. He was very rarely the issue, so he tended to be a little more lax on the slow and careful approach, particularly now that he'd set the good example for Tay. Needless to say, this ego wasn't founded on nothing. The pokemon didn't even flinch as he came up to the two, pleased little grin on his face. It would seem he may have proven, at least to himself, that he wasn't the special one; Everyone else just had to have a different sort of attitude about it. It was a rather good day for him, for that small, simple victory.
