'what's your point again?'
NAME, cobalt aaron zelkova
AGE, sixteen
GENDER, male
BIRTHDAY, january twelfth
BIRTHPLACE, pallet town, kanto
PROFESSION, trainer
PERSONALITY,
cold - adj. - not involving one's feelings; detached; objective cold logic
"upon first impression, cobalt comes off as extremely indifferent. not just toward other people, but to his pokemon as well. he operates, it seems, without feeling and without any regard for those around him."
ambitious - adj. - having a strong desire for success or achievement; wanting power, money, etc.
"being raised in a wealthy, prestigious family, cobalt has grown up underneath the shadow of his parents and older sister, garnet. therefore, in order to break free of this mountainous overshadowing, cobalt throws himself into his training."
determined - adj. - of unwavering mind; resolute; firm
"if there's one thing cobalt will never grow out of, it is his determinedness. if he sets his eyes on some goal - whether it's out outshine his family, or to defeat his opponent in a battle - he won't rest until that goal is reached. it doesn't matter to him how many times he has to try; he'll work and work until his energy is exhausted or he succeeds."
authorative - adj. - exercising or asserting authority; commanding
"cobalt's cold demeanor does not mean that he is shy; rather, the teen often seizes the reins and grasps at authority when possible."
intelligent - adj. - showing sound judgment and rationality
"cobalt's mind is very sharp and rational. he's observant, though not unnaturally so, and years of traveling with his pokemon have strengthened his natural instinct to survive."
sarcastic - adj. - having or marked by a feeling of bitterness and a biting or cutting quality
"sarcasm falls naturally out of cobalt's mouth. normally, his comments are monotone, but when he really gets riled up, they can change from his usual one-tone to a multitude of angry notes."
HISTORY,
cobalt was born in pallet town, kanto, the hometown of many famous trainers who had made their claims on the hall of fame. his mother had been a skilled coordinator - winning the grand festival in kanto multiple times before retiring happily - and his father was an excellent breeder, who somehow knew just how to coax pokemon into producing world-class eggs. they were a match made in heaven, so the media proclaimed. it seemed only natural that this celebrity pair's children would do the same great things as their parents.
cobalt's older sister, garnet zelkova, did not fail the reporters. after sweeping the elite four at the indigo plateau when she was a mere thirteen years old, she announced that she would travel to a distant region - somewhere called hoenn? - and apprentice underneath the professor there to gain some knowledge about new pokemon, a dream she had always had. cobalt was nine then.
he was far too young to understand the expectations that were there for him, but he was old enough to see that his parents wanted him to be great, to "live up to the family name". and so, he rebelled. when he turned ten, despite his parents' advice to choose squirtle or bulbasaur as his starter - garnet had picked squirtle, after all - he chose the toughest starter to begin with, the starter that would make the first few gyms a living nightmare: charmander.
cobalt's kanto adventure was difficult. his charmander was obedient, a docile thing, but the type disadvantage was tough to beat. cobalt was forced to find other measures, different strategies of combating the gym leaders. he used his pokemons' speed to outrace brock's slow onyx and their stealth to outsmart misty's starmie. he had talent, no one could deny that. it was his way of handling them, the media said. he always looked under control when in a battle.
as he traveled through, his pokemon team grew stronger and stronger, and cobalt soon made a name for himself. in the public eye, he was collected, powerful, and unforgiving. he crushed those who were weaker than he, and he trained until he could do the same to those who were stronger. in private, when he was alone underneath the starry sky, he trained both his pokemon and himself mercilessly. cobalt cared for his pokemon - if they went without a meal, so did he. if they trained smashing boulders and racing dangerous beedrill, so did he - but he refused to get closer to them than necessary.
perhaps that was why he suffered an embarrasing defeat at the hands of red - the champion of kanto. it was the first time cobalt considered crying. after having trained so long and so hard... to have suffered such a defeat was almost unbearable.
after the customary handshake, red looked at cobalt, and to the latter's astonishment, shook his head slightly, as if disappointed. this simple gesture tormented the young trainer; what had cobalt done wrong? was it because his pokemon were weak? was it because his training strategies were wrong? days, weeks, even months passed and cobalt stewed over these ideas.
three months after cobalt's defeat, he happened upon red again. this time, cobalt was stronger, faster, and his team was better than ever. another challenge, another battle, another defeat.
when cobalt, shellshocked, asked what he had done wrong, red looked at him almost pitifully. red's pikachu twitched its ears from red's shoulder, gazing down disdainfully at cobalt.
"what are pokemon to you, cobalt?"
"pokemon."
"that's why you lost."
red disappeared a week or so later. without him on the elite four, cobalt defeated the champion with ease. he was once again the victor. but his brief conversation with red haunted him. what did red mean? what could he mean?
on his sixteenth birthday, cobalt set out for johto, leaving all his pokemon behind. he was surprised to see that most of his pokemon were almost relieved to be left behind.
one of the exceptions was his charizard, who nudged his cheek in fond farewell. cobalt patted its orange snout, felt the warm breath on his hand, and he suddenly felt... regret about leaving it in pallet town. he smiled - a rarity in itself - and turned to leave.
two days later, his ship docked at olivine city in johto.
